Leggings Are Back in Fashion. Here’s How to Wear Them Now
Once largely confined to exercise and casual dressing, leggings are appearing with tailored jackets, long coats and smart shoes. Their latest revival offers more ways to wear them beyond the gym.
Leggings have returned to everyday fashion, with designers, celebrities and street-style regulars wearing them with pieces once reserved for more formal outfits. Tailored blazers, crisp shirts, leather jackets and elegant footwear have given the familiar wardrobe staple a broader role this autumn.
The renewed interest extends beyond the traditional black jersey legging. Stirrup designs, structured fabrics and carefully proportioned outfits are bringing the style closer to conventional trousers, although the choice of material and accompanying clothes still makes an enormous difference to the finished look.
For anyone accustomed to wearing leggings mainly at home or for exercise, a few adjustments can make them suitable for the office, weekend appointments and evenings out.
Start With a Tailored Jacket
One of the simplest ways to wear leggings outside the gym is to pair them with a blazer. A longer, slightly oversized jacket provides structure through the shoulders and balances the close-fitting silhouette of the trousers.
Black leggings work particularly well with charcoal, navy or brown tailoring. A white cotton shirt underneath keeps the outfit relatively formal, while a fine-knit jumper creates a softer look for everyday wear.
The proportions deserve attention. A jacket that finishes below the hips generally looks more balanced with leggings than a short, fitted blazer, especially when the rest of the outfit follows a narrow silhouette.
Footwear can change the character of the combination. Loafers and understated ankle boots suit daytime dressing, while pointed heels give the same outfit a more polished finish.
The Return of Stirrup Leggings
Stirrup leggings, recognisable by the narrow strap that runs beneath the foot, have become a particularly interesting alternative to conventional designs.
Originally associated with sportswear and later with the fashion of the 1980s, they have returned in outfits that borrow more from tailoring than athletic clothing.
The strap helps hold the fabric in place, maintaining a continuous line through the leg. When worn with pointed shoes or heels, stirrup leggings can create a neat silhouette without fabric gathering around the ankle.
For a restrained approach, choose black or dark brown and combine them with a long wool coat, fitted knitwear and simple leather shoes. A pair with a substantial, matte finish will generally look smarter than thin, shiny sports leggings.
Some designs place the stirrup beneath the heel of the shoe, leaving it visible. Others keep the strap inside the footwear. Both can work, although the latter is easier to incorporate into a conventional wardrobe.
Pay Attention to Fabric
Leggings may share a basic shape, but their construction determines how they look and behave.
Fine jersey styles can become transparent when stretched and may reveal underwear seams. Thicker stretch fabrics with good recovery offer more coverage and retain their shape after repeated wear.
A smooth, matte surface is usually easier to combine with tailoring and wool outerwear than fabric designed specifically for high-intensity exercise.
Fit matters as much as thickness. Leggings should sit comfortably at the waist without rolling down, pulling across the hips or gathering excessively behind the knees.
Before buying, try sitting, bending and walking in them. Fabric that looks substantial on a hanger may become noticeably thinner when stretched.
What to Wear With Them
The most wearable combinations begin with clothes that many women already own.
For the office: Black, structured leggings with a long charcoal blazer, white shirt and leather loafers. Whether the outfit is appropriate will depend on the workplace dress code.
For the weekend: Dark leggings with an oversized cashmere jumper, long wool coat and flat leather boots.
For an evening out: Stirrup leggings with a silk blouse, fitted jacket and pointed heels.
For casual days: Leggings with a striped cotton shirt, relaxed trench coat and simple trainers.
Colour offers another possibility. Chocolate brown, deep burgundy and dark grey provide alternatives to black without making the outfit difficult to coordinate.
When Leggings Work Better Than Trousers
Leggings are particularly practical beneath long coats and oversized knitwear, where their narrow shape prevents the outfit from becoming too bulky. They also fit easily into tall boots and can be comfortable for days involving plenty of walking or travel.
They are less suitable when the occasion calls for conventional tailoring or when a thin, stretchy fabric cannot provide the structure expected of trousers.
The strongest outfits treat leggings as one component of a complete look rather than relying on their association with comfort. A well-cut jacket, good shoes and suitable fabric can do much of the work.
For autumn, black stirrup leggings and a pair of substantial, matte everyday leggings offer two options worth considering. Neither requires replacing an existing wardrobe, and both can be worn with pieces already in regular use.
